Graduating from radio broadcasting? Congrats! You did it! But now what? As exciting as it is to finally be done with school, stepping into the real world of radio can feel a little overwhelming. The good news? There are tons of ways to get your foot in the door, as long as you stay sharp, stay ready, and stay hustling.

First things first, know where to look. Job hunting in radio means checking out stations big and small. Look into community stations, college radio, online platforms, and even podcast networks. Don’t sleep on the smaller outlets as they’re often where you get the best hands-on experience. Sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Milk Man Unlimited as they are solid places to start, but also keep your ear to the ground and connect with people you met during school. Word of mouth still goes a long way in this industry.

Now, let’s talk about your demo. You NEED one. Think of it as your audio resume—your best work in a quick, engaging package. Whether you’re aiming to be a host, producer, or voice talent, a demo shows what you bring to the table. And here’s the trick: make it shareable. Upload it to SoundCloud or another streaming site and keep that link handy. Employers don’t want to wait around for you to send files. If you can include it on your resume or business card? Even better.

Yep, business cards. Old school? Maybe. Effective? Definitely. They’re a great way to leave a lasting impression, especially if you’re networking at events, conferences, or even just casually meeting someone in the industry. Keep it clean, include your contact info, and throw in that demo link while you’re at it.

And look, your first job might not be glamorous. You might be running board op overnight or helping out on a community show no one listens to yet. Take it. Every gig is a chance to build your portfolio, learn the ropes, and grow your skillset. Say yes, show up, and give it everything. The experience you gain now can open doors down the road.

Lastly, always work on yourself. Radio never stands still, and neither should you. Keep practicing your voice, stay up-to-date with industry trends, and try new things. Learn how to edit better. Get comfortable on video. Pick up a podcasting mic and experiment. The more versatile you are, the more valuable you become.

Graduation isn’t the end, it’s just the start of the next chapter. So build your brand, be ready to hustle, and stay passionate. The radio world is waiting. Now go make some noise!
